Lubbock’s First Freeze of the Season Could Come Soon

Fall is here and temperatures are already dropping and long-term forecasts show high temperatures even in the upper 60's and 70's around Lubbock and the South Plains. For someone who loves the fall weather, I can't wait. But with temperatures dropping, does that mean we are going to see a freeze soon?

Believe it or not, it could happen.

When Does Lubbock Typically Have Its First Freeze?

This may surprise you, but for those in Lubbock County, if tradition and history holds, we could see a freeze fairly soon. In fact, according to a report from EverythingLubbock.com, October 30 is the average date of Lubbock's first freeze. Some years the first freeze comes earlier, some years the first freeze comes later.

And October 30 isn't far away.

Surrounding Counties and Their First Freeze

The Further north you live, the more likely it is that a freeze will hit your area earlier in October. Those counties south and southeast of Lubbock typically don't see a freeze until after November 1.

So for now, lets just enjoy the Fall weather and the eventual cooler temperatures that will be moving over the South Plains. The cold weather will get here soon enough.
