If you are planning on driving anytime today through the weekend, you need to know what to expect when it comes to traffic delays, lane closures, and roads impacted by severe weather.

Expected Severe Icy Conditions

The temperatures are supposed to get down to single digits this weekend with a wind chill as low as -15 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Combine this with possible freezing rain and up to 6 inches of snow expected, and you have enough reasons to stay off the roads as much as possible.

However, if you still have obligations that require you to travel, then know that IH 27, from Abernathy to Plainview, is expected to have ice and snow accumulating on bridges and overpasses.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will be salting these areas, but caution is still highly advised while traveling.

Construction Delays Around Lubbock

Other delays impacting drivers heading to and from Lubbock are not due to weather, but rather to construction projects that are closing lanes and redirecting traffic.

The most important areas of construction that you need to know about are in Littlefield, Morton, and right here in Lubbock.

US 84 from Anton through Littlefield is currently under construction as they work on installing median cable barriers. Alternating lanes will be closed, so plan accordingly.

Next, State Highway 214 (SH 214), south of Morton, is currently undergoing road repairs. Here you can expect traffic delays and even personnel redirecting traffic during certain parts of the day. This construction is happening all through September this year.

Finally, construction on Loop 88 along FM 1585 in South Lubbock is causing delays and traffic redirections as well.
