Texas DPS Safety Tips for Harsh Winter Weather

I don't have to convince anyone that temperatures are lowering in the Lone Star State. I mean, just stand outside for 5 mintues... What I CAN do is pass along some tips and tricks from the Department of Public Safety to protect you and your loved ones during this chilly winter season.

Winter Weather Tips for Texas

Although many Texans can encounter unpredictable weather, the warning for safety remains the same.

Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) recently supplied safety tips for on the road and at home during wintry weather. They start by including the importance of checking that your vehicle's battery, tire pressure and fluid levels are at the proper levels.

They also stress the importance of having an emergency kit in each of your vehicles that contains warm clothes, food, water, first aid and chargers for your cell phone.

Other safety tips when on the road during winter in Texas include the following:

Monitor your local weather channels to get the latest updates before you travel
If freezing rain or sleet is expected, avoid travel and wait for it to clear
Leave early during harsh weather and tell friends and family where you are planning on heading
Drive slow and avoid cruise control for risk of losing steering on dangerous roads

When it comes to home safety tips, Texas DPS also has some key tips:

Sign up for texts or calls from your local emergency notification station
Insulate outdoor faucets and indoor pipes that are on outer walls
Make sure all portable space heaters are at least three feet away from all flammable material and are off when you go to bed
Stay stocked up on firewood and supplies to stay in the house for a long period of time

Lastly, all Texans are urged to NEVER operate a generator inside your home, garage, or any enclosed space to avoid the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
