Texas State Park Adds 3,000 Acres for Visitors to Explore
That's right. One of Texas' most popular state parks will double their size of publicly available land. Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, located in the Hill Country near Fredericksburg, will be adding over three thousand acres to their already impressive location.
Enchanted Rock State Natural Area Expansion
According to a recent announcement from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), the state park has purchased 3,073 acres of new land that is adjacent to their own property for $43 million.
Development of the new acreage to be made available for the public will be accelerated by the Centennial Parks Conservation Fund. This fund was approved by voters back in 2023 that created $1 billion for purchasing and developing land into Texas State Parks.
Gov. Abbott noted that "Texas is home to 88 state parks that showcase our great state's natural beauty to Texans and visitors from all over the globe." He also added that this expansion will allow tourists to enjoy even more of the state, and that he aims to continue to "ensure that what makes Texas unique and beautiful is preserved for generations."
The new expanse was originally used for private hunting, but the TPWD claim that the newly acquired land will also help keep light pollution out of the fast-developing area of the state.
Texas State Park Expansion Process
This big announcement marks the latest land acquisition from the TPWD in months due to the in-depth process that is conducted before officially expanding.
When TPWD identifies potential property in the state, they embark on what the release calls "a due diligence review" to see if the expansion is even feasible for the state park in question.
Once funding is secured and all are parties on board, they can then move forward with the purchase.
In this case, since the sale has been finalized, TPWD will work with the public to develop recreational opportunities and pick a designated opening date.
