A Fish with Six Legs? Winter Season Pests That All West Texans Must Avoid
The colder months in West Texas are often the best time of year for those who aren't fans of creepy-crawly insects, but coincidentally, some bugs pop out more around winter than other seasons.
Winter Pests in West Texas
It sure gets cold in West Texas during the winter months, and it's not just us squishy humans that it affects. If you haven't already noticed, some bugs like ants have already taken to heading underground for the cooler months.
Unfortunately, some pests don't get the message and instead decide to become unofficial roommates. These are the ones that you need to concern yourself with during this time of year. Let's take a look based on the expert research from Texas' very own Myles Pest Services.
Cockroaches
Every Texan is well-acquainted with the odd roach from time to time. Gross? Yep. A sign that you should really clean your house? Oh yeah.
You see, cockroaches are attracted to crumbs and other food that's lying on your house floor. Typically, the German and American cockroaches are the most common in West Texan homes, but regardless of their heritage, you really should clean up after yourself at home to avoid these guys scurrying around and spreading diseases.
Spiders, Rats, and Mice, Oh My!
Other common guests in Texan homes are nasty spiders of all kinds. Whether they're fuzzy and harmless or sleek and deadly, most homes will be better off without spiders in every corner.
Rats and mice are never welcome guests. I feel like I don't need to defend this claim, but wild rodents of any kind can be dangerous, they can spread diseases, and they can get into your pantry and spoil your food.
Silverfish
Finally, one of the more unique pests during winter months in West Texas are the silverfish. Despite what their name suggests, these are insects rather than something with gills.
Silverfish will most likely head straight for your laundry room or bathroom when it gets too cold outside. You may often see these scurry away if you pick up a pile of clothes you left on the floor for too long.
You don't need to fear getting bit by these guys, but your biggest concern should be your clothes. Silverfish actually feed on clothes, paper, and even glue—what a balanced diet!
So, there you have it. West Texas is home to some of nature's best, but when the temps start to drop, your home may be the last line of defense for some of these seasonal pests.
