One of my favorite Instagram accounts is mondes_threads.

She's a talented seamstress, and most of what she posts are alterations- particularly on awful, ill-fitting, cheap online dresses.

She makes them wearable, but I'm sure her services are not cheap. She goes to great lengths to match and add fabric, straps, corsetting, zippers, etc.

She'll be the first to tell you that most online pieces that appear stylish, couture, on-trend, and surprisingly affordable are too good to be true.

For the money spent on the cheap dress and the expensive alteration, her clients could have just bought a quality dress in the first place. But how do you know a dress is of good quality?

The best possible way is to see it for yourself, try it on, and get the feedback of family, friends, and a knowledgeable staff. That's the beauty of a formal dress shop- whether it's for a wedding, prom, or a quinceanera.

However, changes in consumer spending habits (like buying cheap garbage online) and a tough economy have hit many of these dress shops hard, including Lubbock's Bella's Bridal and Prom, which announced they are closing up shop soon.

This economy has become a huge burden and this is a burden we have chosen not to bear any further. The online sales have drastically changed the look of the bridal industry and how it works.

Bella's Bridal will no longer order dresses and has marked-down items in the store. All bridal gowns and jewelry are 50% off, shoes and veils are $30, and quince gowns are $700.

So the closure may present a great opportunity to pick up a quality gown inexpensively, and the ability to discover "the one" in front of family and friends- truly a joyous moment, but one that may soon be gone forever, thanks to cheap online garbage.
