Remember how nerve-wracking getting your report card could be as a school-age child? Suddenly, you'd remember every homework assignment you turned in late, every project you phoned in, every pop quiz you failed to study for.
But what if it wasn't exactly your fault? What if your school was the one who let you down? But how are schools held accountable?
Texas Schools Receive First "Report Cards" In Five Years
According to the Texas Tribune, the Texas Education Agency finally released school district scores after a lengthy court battle. The latest scores available reflect the 2022-23 school year. The results for next year are in, but unreleased due to a different court case.

Before those years, scoring was on a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
How Are Texas School Districts Rated?
Much like students, school districts are given an A-F rating based on the following metrics: school achievement, school progress, and "closing the gaps."
In other words, how well students are doing, how much they are improving, and how well schools are improving the scores of children who need extra help, like second language learners and special needs students.
What Is The Controversy With Texas School Ratings?
According to CBS News, many districts feel that the TEA's new accountability scoring makes it much more difficult to achieve a good rating, "that includes a redesigned STAAR test and stricter requirements in college, career, and military readiness."

Some feel that the scoring system is unfair and that it paints the public school system in an unflattering way. Given the controversy around private school vouchers/ school choice initiatives, perhaps those people have a reason to feel that way.
How Did Lubbock Area Schools Fare Under This New Scoring System?
It varies wildly. There are "grades" all over the place.
If you are making a decision about where to send your child, you may want to review the results, but remember, the latest results are from 2022-2023, and improvements (or backsliding) could have happened since then.
