Southcrest Christian School has announced in the Spring 2019 semester they will begin a four-day school week.

Southcrest Christian School will become Lubbock’s only school with a four-day week.

The school day at Southcrest will extend 30 to 45 minutes, depending on grade level, due to the change. Friday Care will be available to elementary students when childcare is needed.

Research shows that a four-day week model leads to better performance in key subjects, fewer absences, better preparation for teaching, less extracurricular activity interruptions, and more time to teach difficult subjects. A study by Georgia State University and Montana State University also showed that a four-day school week had a positive impact on students' math performance.

Others have bemoaned the change to the long-time school model, arguing that it doesn't help schools save money, has no substantial impact on student growth and actually makes it more difficult for some families who may need to spend extra money on day care. The impact on low-income families in particular has been a major talking point among critics of a four-day school week.
