A Texas man was seriously injured- and heroically rescued- after he fell inside an abandoned grain elevator in Forth Worth, Texas, according to NBC DFW News.

Forth Worth emergency crews responded to 1937 South Main Street near midnight on October 2nd and utilized a "high-angle rescue response," to retrieve the man.

It is unclear whether the man was seeking shelter in the silo, participating in "urban exploration" or was in the abandoned structure for another reason.

These types of accidents happen in both used and unused grain structures more than you would think. According to FarmWeekNow, in 2022 alone there were 83 cases of grain elevator injuries, including 24 fatalities.

Luckily the Fort Worth Fire Department trains extensively for this type of event, even if it doesn't happen that often in the area, according to Craig Trojacek who spoke with NBC DFW.

He went on to say that in addition to the peril presented by the grain elevator, any abandoned building presents many hazards, including structural decay and, "a lot of trash, you've got a lot of drug paraphernalia, dirty needles, wild animals that are living in there"

Another nearby grain silo is slated for demolition after city officials could not make contact with the original owner.

Hopefully, more abandoned silos can be demolished as they present not only a danger to people who enter them- but also an eyesore for neighbors.
