The Best Rock Side Projects According to The Painman
Now days, it seems many big rock stars have multiple projects they're involved with, be it their primary interest or just a one-off side project. Heck, some are both primary projects, like Corey Taylor has with Slipknot and Stone Sour.
But, today I'm giving you a small look into my brain as I examine my favorite rock side projects.
A Perfect Circle
While APC was actually the brain-child of guitarist Billy Howerdel, it's still considered by many as Maynard's side project, as his primary duties are with Tool.
Audioslave
Featuring members of Rage Against the Machine and Soundgarden, when Audioslave was formed, neither of the other bands were actually together. But, this all-star lineup is definitely a side-seat passenger to their original bands.
This super group side project features Chris Cornell (Soundgarden), Tom Morello (Rage), Tim Commerford (Rage) and Brad Wilk (Rage).
Velvet Revolver
Velvet Revolver was formed by members of two different legendary rock bands, Stone Temple Pilots and Guns N' Roses.
This super group side project featured the late Scott Weiland (STP), Slash (GNR), Duff McKagan (GNR), Matt Sorum (GNR) and Dave Kushner.
Temple of the Dog
During the sonic boom of the Seattle sound, members of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden came together to form this band in honor of a deceased musician friend, Andrew Wood of Mother Love Bone.
Temple of the Dog featured Jeff Ament (PJ), Matt Cameron (Soundgarden/PJ), Chris Cornell (Soundgarden), Stone Gossard (PJ), Eddie Vedder (PJ), and Mike McCready (PJ).
Mad Season
When formed, Mad Season featured members of three of the biggest names to come out of the Seattle grunge movement; Alice in Chains, Screaming Trees and Pearl Jam.
Mad Season is/was the late Layne Staley (AIC), Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees), Mike McCready (Pearl Jam), John Baker Saunders.
The Raconteurs
Jack White was catapulted into stardom with the White Stripes. During the White Stripes' journey, White took a step to the side to start up The Raconteurs, which also features Brenden Benson.
