Crobot’s Brandon Yeagley Discusses Self-Titled EP, Guitar-Heavy Sound + More

Liz Ramanand, Loudwire

Crobot have emerged as one of the more intriguing new bands of 2014, with fans getting a taste of what the group has to offer on the outfit’s self-titled debut EP, featuring the current radio hit ‘Nowhere To Hide.’ Frontman Brandon Yeagley recently spoke with ’Loudwire Nights’ host Full Metal Jackie about the band’s EP and how guitar-heavy groups are coming back to the forefront. Check out Full Metal Jackie’s chat with Crobot’s Brandon Yeagley below:

Crobot are being cited for showcasing a retro-style of riffing. Brandon, what’s the most important factor, the special ingredient, that turns an influence like Black Sabbath or Deep Purple into something fresh or new?

Funk. We love the funky side of those bands. Sometimes you have to dig a little deeper into the Sabbath catalog to find those funky tracks, but we love it all. We like to groove as well. We like to get down and dirty.

You recorded at The Machine Shop with producer Machine, who is coming off a pair of great back to back albums from Lionize and Clutch. How important was his input to your new album?

He was a great input — great relationship that we developed even previously before working on the album. We got to know Machine and hung out and understood that he definitely understands where we’re coming from and what Crobot is at it’s core. Working with bands like Clutch and Lionize, being our favorite bands to work with, it was really cool. He really got who we are as a band before we even stepped foot into the studio.

Right now there seems to be a tight knit community of bands that love the same music as Crobot like Clutch, Orchid and Truckfighters, to name a few. Why is it so important for your scene to be gathering so much momentum. Why do you think it’s happening now?

Music is at such a whirlwind and things are almost in a disco era, as we like to say. History is seemingly repeating itself so, hopefully rock and roll comes back on top like it’s previously known to have done. We just like fuzz, in your face guitar riffy stuff, the funky stuff — the side of heaviness you can still dance to. That’s really what we’re all about.

Brandon, what’s the most amusing or interesting thing about the relationship with the brothers in the band, Jake and Paul, in the context of a band?

It’s funny to see them in their own element onstage and working so well together as a rhythm section holding everything down for us. I mean, what better rhythm to have holding the fort than two brothers you know are going to be on the same page? Very interesting to watch their chemistry.

Thanks to Crobot’s Brandon Yeagley for the interview. The band’s four-song, self-titled EP is currently available on Amazon and iTunes. You can listen to ‘Loudwire Nights’ with host Full Metal Jackie Monday through Friday at 7PM through Midnight on more than 20 stations across America.
