You guys remember that band DEVO, right? Well, part of their schtick was based on the idea of de-evolution. We are seeing that now. We are seeing a race back to the bottom.

Here's the long and short of it. In Texas, if you believe that "the rapture" is near, you don't have to educate your kids AT ALL. You can home school them and/or teach them nothing. You can just wait for the seven horns of the apocalypse to blow. You don't have to have any evidence of this; you just have to believe it and that's enough.

All of this according to a Texas Court ruling in favor of a family accused of not teaching their children anything.

We've seen a variation of this with families that refuse to give their kids medical treatment, and those kids ultimately die. It's amazingly tragic and sad to see these kids, who could survive with a little modern medical help survive, die because of their parents' beliefs.

So which of these constitute abuse? I have to say both. A person with little to no education will find it near impossible to navigate and survive in this world. There has to be a way, a compromise, that allows parents to raise their children they way they want, without putting them in a crippling social situation when they grow up.

Let's not forget, we're not just talking about the child here (even though that's the most important part of the discussion). We're also talking about what these kids will mean to us and what we'll have to do for them in the future. It's a complicated issue for sure.

As for the religious aspects, well, if you believe god gave you your brain, it's reasonable to think that he'd expect you to use it.
