I say, let's get rid of the death penalty. Not because I have a problem putting people to death, but because it has become such a tangled legal mess that it's just not worth it.

We have to take the time and make the effort to make sure the wrong people aren't executed. In order to do that, we have loophole after loophole that the real criminals and attorneys exploit.

So is the death penalty a deterrent? I think almost all murders happen in "the heat of the moment" and the idea that the killer will be killed for killing never crosses their mind. I personally would rather be executed than to spend my entire life behind bars. So, that's two pretty big reasons why the death penalty itself is ineffective as a deterrent.

Now you've probably thought of the legal fees, but did you know it costs substantially more to house them too?  Check out this info from deathpenaltyinfo.org.

Cases without the death penalty cost $740,000, while cases where the death penalty is sought cost $1.26 million. Maintaining each death row prisoner coststaxpayers $90,000 more per year than a prisoner in general population. There are 714 inmates on California's death row.

Once again, I'm no bleeding heart here. There's more than a few crimes where I think you should pretty much be shot on sight. It's just this system of justice known as the death penalty is expensive and ultimately not worth it.
