What's crazy about this new world of radio is it seems to hurt the big cities more than the smaller ones.  I think it's because the big stations lose their way and their connection to the streets.  There's just so much money at that level that the suits pretty much take all the life out of a station. A lot of people were shocked at KUFO Portland  and now Q101 Chicgo packing it in, and I think you'll see KEGL in Dallas pack it in soon.  The stations lost their way and allowed themselves to be sandwiched out of business (or nearly out of business) by classic rock and alternative stations.  Plus, back to my original theme, if your station is lifeless or lacking energy, your listeners might as well listen to streams.

I think consistency has a lot to do with it as well. I think they worst thing we ever did was put the Bob and Tom show on the air.  I think the show does not belong on music radio.  It might be okay on some talk station or something but its just too much yapping and stupid songs for me.  Other than this misstep, and even in addition to it, we've kept our music pretty consistent over the years.  All the while we've also kept our jock chatter pretty low. We have fun on the air but don't ever try to pretend that we are more important than the music.

Anyways the stations that have packed it in were very inconsistent in their musical presentations over the years, some even opting for almost or full-time talk in the afternoons as well as mornings.  It's funny in my industry some of the headlines say "the death of rock" but it's actually the death of those who don't rock but pretend to.

So anyways, I try not to be in denial about radio, it's the same as everything else.  There's just a lot more choices out there.  The "best" choice will always do well, and we do our best day after day to be your "best" choice.
