Birthdays and anniversaries are funny things, they all depend on how you calculate them.  The birthday of Star Trek is generally acknowledged as being September 8th 1966, the day the show debuted. However, on this date in 1964 shooting began on the pilot.

The pilot for Star Trek was known as "The Cage" with "Commander Christopher Pike". It was immediately shot down and a second pilot was filmed with the Captain Kirk you all know and love. Here's the original opening sequence.

Oh, one last thing.  You know Star Trek is better than Star Wars, right?  Yeah, I went there.
