The Message

The Lubbock Police Department posted "Happy Black History Month" on their Facebook page and immediately some of us started popping popcorn. We all knew we were just minutes away from the first racist and/or "..but what about?" knuckleheads outing themselves on the page. I thought it was a nice message and appropriate for a diverse community. Then again, I also knew the haters would swarm the post like flies to fresh dookie.

Why It's No Big Deal

If I said "Merry Christmas" to someone, would you immediately say, "What about Hanukkah?" or "What about Kwanza?" What if I said "Good morning" would I then be surrounded by people saying "What about the night?" or "I notice you didn't mention afternoons". The idea that the Lubbock Police can't wish someone or something well is ridiculous. I guess I should say that these haters do not represent the Lubbock community at large, but we certainly know people who act like this.

Kudos To Cops

Police life runs in my family and it's hard. It doesn't have to be made even harder by not allowing the police to at least be pleasant to people. I hope this type of thing does not make the police more hesitant to reach out to various communities. After all, the police represent and serve all of us, even the unpleasant jerks who post on their Facebook page. I wanted to avoid this mini-kerfuffle altogether, but something needed to be said about something so nice being turned so ugly.
