I was reading an article on how the Lubbock Police will be getting training on canine behavior. Now, bleeding hearts, we'll deal with "killing fewer humans" some other time; let's focus on THIS issue.

The new training is in hopes of eliminating or at least minimizing the number of canine deaths.

This is awesome news, with canine behavior being even more predictable than human behavior. A pet should also not be shot because there is some other problem at an owners house.

Heathen (on The RockShow) also brought up the very important point that a policeman has "a lot of options on his Batman utility belt" -- pepper spray, a stun gun and even a baton should be more than enough to discourage aggressive animals.

These, of course, are still weapons of last resort, and the police training may result in even less harm to the animals. This is also good news for owners, because many have already expressed the opinion that having their dog hurt or killed just might spur them to violence. So you go, LPD -- this training rocks, and you rock for being a part of it.
