This Saturday, February 27, the Science Spectrum & OMNI Theater will host the Tenth Annual Severe Weather Awareness Day. The all-day event will take place from 10am to 5pm. The Lubbock office of the National Weather Service and Student Chapter of the American Meteorological Society at Texas Tech are also participating in the event.

According to James Nesmith at the Science Spectrum, activities will include hands-on weather experiments for kids of all ages, live weather demonstrations with tornado and lightning simulators, information on severe weather preparedness, and door prizes. Storm Chasing vehicles and weather instrumentation from Texas Tech’s Severe Storm Research Team will be on-site and open for all to see.

OMNI Theater screenings of the film "Tornado Alley" will be held at 11am, 1pm, 3pm and 5pm. "Tornado Alley" shows a first-person perspective of researchers and storm chasers chasing tornadoes. For additional film information visit www.tornadoalleymovie.com.

Meteorologists from the Lubbock office of the National Weather Service will hold a Skywarn Storm Spotter Training session and Severe Weather Safety Talks.

NWS Tornado / Severe Weather Safety Talks – 11:00 & 3:00pm (approx. 30 mins. each session)

Severe Weather Awareness Day is free to attend at the Science Spectrum, but there is a charge to see "Tornado Alley" in the OMNI Theater.  Parents can also get their child's photo taken with Owlie, the NWS' official mascot.
