Singer and bassist of Mastodon Troy Sander stopped by a Flint, Michgan radio station and explained the meaning of the hit song "Curl of the Burl".

Sander explained that in the Pacific Northwest people go into the woods, cut the burls, which are unique designs on trees, and sell them to furniture makers or wood-makers, and use that money to buy more meth, thus it's a vicious cycle of being an addict. Sander went on to say that the burls on trees are "almost like a cancer" and these swirls and curls are only on certain trees.
