Alan Bowman Enters Transfer Portal & Doesn’t Owe Anyone Anything

Texas Tech quarterback Alan Bowman has entered the transfer portal, and like the Goblet of Fire he'll come out a new person on the other side.

Bowman said in his announcement on Twitter: "I have decided to enter the transfer portal as a graduate transfer with 3 years of eligibility remaining. I will forever be a proud alumnus of Texas Tech University and will always cherish the memories I’ve made here. I cannot wait to see where this journey takes me next."

The embattled quarterback also thanked former Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury, who recruited him when no other Big 12 school did. He also thanked current head coach Matt Wells for continuing to provide opportunities over the last two years. Bowman went on to thank his teammates, the support staff and AD Kirby Hocutt for making his time as a Red Raider special.

This move will leave the Red Raiders with four quarterbacks on campus, with Henry Colombi now leading the clubhouse with the most experience. Behind him is San Angelo native Maverick McIvor, Frenship Tiger Donovan Smith, and prized recruit and Lubbock's own via Eastland Behren Morton.

The overwhelming thoughts on social media have been positive for Bowman after the announcement, but he's bound to get some negativity because of his decision to transfer. Unfortunately, it's the nature of the beast in college football. Some people perceive the transfer as Bowman giving up and not being tough enough to earn the starting job against Morton coming in as a true freshman.

I've hammered Bowman for his decision-making. I've slammed him for his footwork. I've complained about his pocket presence. But I've never once questioned the man's toughness.

He battled back from not one, but two lung injuries and reclaimed the starting job. He broke his collar bone, finished the damn game, then regained his starting job. He hurt his ankle, got replaced, and threw a pick-six on his first play back from getting benched. Then, in that same game, led three-straight scoring drives to close the Big 12 conference game with a win.

Bowman owes nothing else to Texas Tech. He's not scared of competing for a starting job. He's completed his race at Texas Tech, and now will look for another opportunity to play. Bowman will be a graduate transfer with immediate eligibility to play for a new team in 2021.
