Much to the chagrin of its critics like Michael Moore and many movie reviewers, the story of Chris Kyle has won the hearts of Americans.

Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper surpassed The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and Guardians of the Galaxy as the highest-grossing film of 2014.

American Sniper has earned $337.2 million at the domestic box office. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 made $336.9 million, while Guardians of the Galaxy made $337.2 million.

According to Forbes, American Sniper has also become the first R-rated film to dominate the box office since Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan in 1998. Ironically, both were war-related films and boasted big named stars like Bradley Cooper in American Sniper and Tom Hanks in Saving Private Ryan.

Even though the film lost out on the big awards at the Oscars, it was easily the most popular film among the American public.
