Baker Mayfield Still Thinks About Texas Tech’s NSFW Chant in 2016
Back in 2016, Baker Mayfield and Patrick Mahomes lit up Lubbock in an incredible game that's been talked about by millions since both former Texas Tech QBs have found success in the NFL.
Mayfield went on to be the number one draft pick of the Cleveland Browns and brought them out of the muck to the playoffs, while Mahomes has had one of the best starts to a career out of any quarterback in NFL history.
With Mayfield's time with the Browns seemingly coming to an end, he's now reminiscing about the good times. One of the good times he remembers is that night when he and Mahomes combined for more than 1,000 yards of offense and double-digit touchdowns.
Mayfield played a very good game, throwing for seven touchdowns and only needing 27 completions to do so. Oklahoma won the game 66-59, but Texas Tech fans at a jam-packed Jones AT&T Stadium fired off this NSFW chant anyways:
Mayfield joined the Ya Neva Know Podcast and went in-depth on his time at Texas Tech, Oklahoma and everything going on in the NFL. The best part of the interview, to me, came when he was reflecting on his return to Lubbock after starting for Oklahoma for a year and a half.
"My welcome-back party to Texas Tech in Lubbock in 2016 — that stadium can probably fit 68,000. It's a lot of people, and it's a lot of hostile people," Mayfield said, "They wake up and choose violence, pretty much, most of the days."
He wasn't done.
"They'll throw those dry tortillas and batteries (allegedly) at you on the field," Mayfield said. "But honestly, not exaggerating, probably 45,000 of those people were chanting, 'F*** you, Baker,' during the game."
It's true. You can watch our own video of it above. Mayfield finished: "If you went back and watched the television (broadcast), you can hear it on the broadcast. They said, 'F*** you.'"
Mayfield said he loved the chants.
"I love away games because there's nothing like having the crowd go from completely roaring to completely silent," Mayfield said. "And then I notice a lot of things going around in the games, just in public and stuff. I'm a sicko. So when fans started chanting that, I'm like, 'Cool.'"
