Yeah those shirts that you get in the parking lot are a "good deal".  Some continue to be a good deal, but more often than not they're made super cheap and won't last like a regular shirt.  That's just the downside of the actual merch, it's a little worse than that in the long run.

These days it's tough for bands to make ends meet.  They aren't getting what they used to off of record sales, and the costs of traveling gig to gig keep sky rocketing.  MOST club bands wouldn't even be able to be on the road if it wasn't for the merch they sell along the way.  To a lesser degree, it's the same with the big bands. If you want to see the big productions, the big bands and all that good stuff, you've got to support the bands.  You might think, well, they make enough off tickets.  Well, that's just going to mean they're going to charge you more for tickets next time.

I kind of think it's a matter of pride to buy the stuff FROM your favorite bands and to buy authentic stuff.  When I was a teen, if someone showed up to school in a shirt from a concert they didn't go to, we'd mock them forever and sometimes beat the sh!t out of them. Of course, back then the only way you could get a concert shirt was to go to the concert, it was the guys who wore their big brothers or cousins shirt that took the flak.

So the long and short of it is, if you buy this 'bootleg merchandise' you're going to get ripped off a lot of the time and the artists is going to get ripped off ALL of the time.
