Kanye West’s ‘The Birthday Party’ Inadvertently Named After Goth Icons
I got very excited when I found out what Yeezy is naming his political party: The Birthday Party.
“Because when we win, it’s everybody’s birthday,” West said.
Goths and post-punk aficionados are going to have a lot of fun with this. The Birthday Party was an extremely experimental, noisy, transgressive post-punk/goth band fronted by Nick Cave, who went on to form Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Full disclosure: I have a very large tattoo of Birthday Party-era Nick Cave. I'm slightly obsessed.
I doubt very much that West knew about the band The Birthday Party, but I'm going to pretend he did anyway. Regardless of how you feel about Ye, he is one of the best producers who has ever lived, and, like most geniuses, his stability may be a bit....questionable. And maybe he's a closeted goth -- who knows?
Anyways, enjoy The Birthday Party, if you like chaotic, amazing noise. If you don't, you might wish to avoid it.
