Did you know that Lubbock has its very own team of superheroes and princesses? It's true. Meet the LBK Guardians, whose mission is to spread joy to children- particularly those who are sick or underprivileged. It's a cause that is very dear to my heart.

When I was a child I was frequently very sick, requiring weeks of hospitalization most years for my severe asthma. I primarily remember the pain of the needles, the blinding lights and loud noises waking me up constantly, and the horrified looks of healthy children visiting relatives. To be fair, children are scared of other children toting an oxygen tank, as it may be their first realization that human bodies are fallible. Suffice it to say, it was not a very good time for me.

I believe that if I had been visited by a loving cast of characters that interested me, my memories of that time may have been less traumatic. And that's why I believe in the LBK Guardians.

I recently spoke with my friend Denae about LBK Guardian's mission:

LBK Guardians is a nonprofit organization working under Lubbock-Con Ventures. As a group, we are comprised of cosplayers who love our community and believe wholeheartedly in supporting local. Our heroes and princesses do monthly hospital visits at UMC Children's Hospital and work with other non-profits such as The Burkhart Center and High Point Village.

The heroes and princesses volunteer their time and in many cases pay for their own costumes, wigs, etc. It's worth it for the smiles they bring to Lubbock area children, but LBK Guardians could use a little help with Halloween coming up. In order to bring the joy of Halloween to as many children as possible, they are requesting that members of the community purchase items off of their Amazon wishlist (click on text to be directed to the list). Most of the items on the list are inexpensive but will go a long way toward helping them with various safe Halloween events like trunk-or-treats and in-hospital trick-or-treating.

Here's a look at the LBK Guardians in action in our community:
