In the past 10 years the band Alice in Chains has lost two of its founding members to drug overdoses. Layne Staley, the lead singer, died in April of 2002, and Mike Starr, the bassists died, earlier this year; both after years of battling drug addiction. On a new website for Staley there was a message inviting fans out to celebrate his birthday (he would have been 44 today) and for a memorial for Mike Starr. The event is to raise awareness and to show support for people with heroin addictions.

The new website is a way for fans to share strength and “hope for heroin recovery” through stories, health tips and includes an “Underground”  fan art gallery, newsletter, and quotes.

The birthday and memorial celebration is set for tonight in Seattle.
