Suffocation’s Guy Marchais Diagnosed With Cancer
Guy Marchais, former guitarist for Suffocation, has been diagnosed with cancer. A GoFundMe page as been set up for Marchais in an attempt to raise $100,000 toward his medical bills.
Marchais was part of Suffocation’s comeback in 2003, playing rhythm guitar alongside lead shredder Terrance Hobbs. Guy performed on Souls to Deny (2004), Suffocation (2006), Blood Oath (2009) and Pinnacle of Bedlam (2013) before departing from the brutal death metal legends in 2016.
“I’m just done. I’m not willing to put in the work that it takes,” Guy told us in an exclusive interview. “Terrance [Hobbs, guitar] puts in like 150 percent, Derek [Boyer, bass] puts in 150 percent. Right before I decided to leave I wasn’t putting in anything. They were writing the new album […Of the Dark Light] and my brain wasn’t in it. I wrote some stuff but I never even showed them. I was just somewhere else thinking about not doing it anymore.”
The GoFundMe page for Marchais’ was started on Jan. 27, roughly a week after the guitarist learned of his diagnosis. The fundraiser’s description reads:
On January 19th, 2018, we found out that Guy Marchais was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is a blood cancer effecting the body’s immune system and lymph nodes. This comes just 80 days after his niece was diagnosed with the same exact thing. Although not genetic, lighting struck twice in our family. I’m calling to everyone to donate what you can. Even with health insurance, bills are piling up in the thousands. There are many more tests to be done before starting his treatment plan on February 5th, which includes chemo and possibly radiation. Our family is struggling and could really use your help.
As of this posting, about $6,000 has been raised. Terrance Hobbs gave to the fund, writing, “I know you’re a long way from your goal, but it wouldn't be right if I didn't help, love ya Guy, and i wish you the best and a speedy recovery….”
Death / Iced Earth / Charred Walls of the Damned drumming legend Richard Christy also offered a donation — “Guy, so sorry to hear about this and hope you get better very soon!”
