Wow.

Lamar County Democratic Party Chairman Gary O'Connor has resigned after making an ass of himself and calling Senator Tim Scott, who's Black, an "oreo" on his Facebook page.

"I am deeply and sincerely sorry for my inappropriate and hurtful use of the racist term I used to describe Sen. Tim Scott on my personal Facebook page," O'Connor told the Washington Examiner. "It was insensitive, and I have embarrassed myself and my party by its use."

He went on to say: "As a result, I feel compelled to offer my resignation as chair of the Lamar County Democratic Party for consideration by the County Executive Committee."

Bravo. Thanks for stepping down so that someone with manners and common decency can take your place. If there's ever room in your vocabulary to refer to a Black person as an "oreo," then you need to learn some new words.

I don't even feel the need to explain to you exactly what it means. You can probably figure it out for yourself with a few seconds of thought. The bottom line is that it isn't acceptable for public servants to throw racial slurs around like it doesn't matter. Our politicians should be role models to the citizen of the world they're trying to make a better place.

So here's to weeding out the bad guys, whether they're racist, homophobic or just a crazy religious zealot. We can do better. There is hope, though. If we just wait around long enough, more of these idiots will shoot themselves in the foot using social media irresponsibly.
