Iconic singer and rock and roll superstar Tom Petty is dead, the manager for the singer and his band The Heartbreakers confirmed Monday evening. He was 66.

In a post on the official Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Facebook page, Tony Dimitriades, longtime manager of the band, confirmed Petty's passing, writing on behalf of the singer's family:

On behalf of the Tom Petty family we are devastated to announce the untimely death of our father, husband, brother, leader and friend Tom Petty.

He suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu in the early hours of this morning and was taken to UCLA Medical Center but could not be revived.

He died peacefully at 8:40pm PST surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends.

News spread earlier Monday that Petty had been hospitalized after suffering full cardiac arrest and placed on life support. After that, things got murky.

CBS News, citing LAPD, reported that Petty had died after being taken off life support. However, that was not the case, and the outlet later walked back that story, issuing a "clarification" that Petty was still alive.

Rest in peace, Tom Petty: October 20, 1950 – October 2, 2017
