US Postmaster Proposes Eliminating Saturday Mail Delivery

Email and other electronic transactions have caused a dramatic drop in the volume of snail-mail and its associated revenues — so much so that Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe has proposed eliminating Saturday mail delivery.

It’s a move that could save the United States Postal Service as much as $3.1 billion a year.

And people may not even mind the cutback. Donahoe cites a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll taken last year in which more than half of respondents were fine with not getting Saturday deliveries.

But others disagree. Montana Sen. Jon Tester says implementing the change in states like his could mean long drives for even the simplest of errands. “It’s important to have delivery on Saturday in places like Montana to get things like medicine and things they need,” he said.
