O'Donnell High School has reportedly painted over its Ten Commandments mural. Unfortunately, this isn't really a victory for anyone because the proper lesson wasn't taught to students.

You only need to look as far as the district superintendent's message to know that O'Donnell at large seems to have an ax to grind with the world.

According to the Lamesa Press Reporter, O'Donnell ISD Superintendent Dr. Cathy Amonett had this to say in a press release:

"The current state of American constitutional jurisprudence, however, does not permit the District to continue its display of the mural."

Do you get it? Her claim here isn't that what they did was wrong, but that the big, bad government doesn't allow it. In the same statement, she even congratulated the students on their behavior to support the illegal painting.

"I am so very proud of the students at O’Donnell ISD for taking a stand for what they believe in and for demonstrating extremely mature conduct in the expression of those beliefs," Dr. Amonett said. "They have shown themselves to the world to be strong, intelligent and passionate students who deserve to be respected."

Dr. Amonett has blown it on all accounts.

A lesson about tolerance and respect could have been taught here. There are lessons about bullying and humility that could be taught here as well. Not everyone supported or agreed with this painting, but they were forced to go along with it so they would not be ostracized or targeted for retribution. And I'm not guessing when I say that. I have received correspondence from O'Donnell thanking me for speaking up.

Instead of this passing as a 'whoopsie,' Dr. Amonett is digging in her heels, which will only continue to make this more of an issue.

I'm not sure if leadership or lack of knowledge in civics is worse. It's great Dr. Amonett supports the kids. Now, if she'd only make sure they're educated about the separation of church and state.
