8-Year-Old Texas Girl Dies After Being Sucked Into Hotel Pool Pipe
8-year-old Aliyah Jaico was enjoying a day of swimming with her family at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Houston, Texas when she was tragically sucked into a hotel pool pipe, resulting in her death. Aliyah's mother realized she was missing and reported it to hotel staff. Police arrived on the scene and security camera footage obtained showed Aliyah going underwater and not returning to the surface.
The pipe she was sucked into was a "12-to-16 inch unsecured open gap in the swimming pool flow system of the hotel's lazy river". Texas Equusearch worked with police and the fire department to free the girl. The pool was drained and it took 13 hours to recover her body.
The mother of 8-year-old Aliyah Jaico, described as a girl who "loved to swim", has filed a wrongful death suit against Hilton and Unique Crowne Hospitality over the horrific incident. While Hilton offered their condolences, they also stated that the property is "independently owned and operated by a third party."
A very small portion of people are victims of "circulation entrapment" in the United States every year. For more statistics, take a look at the 2014-2018 Reported Circulation/Suction Entrapment Incidents Associated with Pools, Pas, and Whirlpool Bathtubs, 2019 Report.
This story is heartbreaking and we send our heartfelt condolences to Aliyah's family and friends. We hope that you get the justice you deserve. This should have never happened.
