A Growing Problem at Lubbock Schools Has Parents Fed Up
When picking up little Susie and Billy after school, some Lubbock parents disregard designated parking spots for the disabled, causing difficulties for the students and parents who genuinely need them.
One concerned parent brought up the subject in a Facebook post this morning:
Look...
It may seem like it's not a big deal to spend a few minutes parked in those zones. You weren't there for very long. You snagged the kids and dipped out fast. It's not like you watched someone on crutches or using a cane struggle to get to their vehicle. You didn't see anyone in a wheelchair. You didn't see anyone who appeared to need the spot, so it's cool, right?
Wrong.
Think about it. Not all disabilities are visibly present. This is important to remember when you choose to take a parking spot from a disabled person at school pick-up, or at any other time, for that matter.
Not all disabled people use a wheelchair. Just because a person is walking does not mean one of those blue spots isn't meant for them. Plenty of disabilities go virtually unnoticed in public. It's easy for an able-bodied person to forget, or to be insensitive to the subject without even realizing it.
Someone suffering from chronic pain, a traumatic brain injury, a learning disability, a mental health disorder, epilepsy, a heart condition, and SO many other conditions may appear to be completely healthy, when the reality is much different.
Please, refrain from parking in a spot designated for someone with a disability. It doesn't matter if nobody is around, or if you're in a crowded parking lot. Just don't do it. Don't do it when you pick up your kids. Don't do it when you're making a quick stop at the store. Don't ever do it. That's the easiest way to ensure you aren't ruining someone else's day.
Be mindful and set an example for your children by doing the right thing and parking in the right spot when you pick your kids up from school!
