A volunteer youth leader at Abilene Texas' Beltway Park Church has been arrested on child pornography charges, according to KTXS 12.

Why does this keep happening? I have some theories, but first, let's review the facts.

Charles Goff was arrested and charged after admitting to a fellow church member that he "struggled" with pornography, specifically "videos of teen girls 14-15 years old."

He had been volunteering as a Beltway Youth Leader for three years before his arrest.

After meeting with detectives, he admitted to soliciting nude photos from teen girls on social media and police found videos of underage girls on his phone.

He is being held on $100,000 bond.

Beltway Park Church released a statement following the incident, indicating that the safety and well-being of church members are their priority and that upon learning about Goff's proclivities, they immediately alerted police.

The statement further indicated that Goff had passed background checks and that before this incident, "he had served in good standing, with no prior concerns or complaints raised."

The church also encouraged anyone with information that could help the investigation to go forward to the Abilene police.

I commend Beltway for reporting Goff to the police immediately. It was the right thing to do, as he was actively victimizing children by soliciting them online.

Who knows how far he might have gone had they chosen to sweep this under the rug?

It should also be noted that Beltway is a "mega-church" with a large congregation and two campuses. More people means a greater chance that one will be a creep.

I believe that incidents like these keep happening for a couple of reasons. One could be that the offender knows they are doing wrong, feels bad about it, and truly wants to amend their behavior.

However, I don't believe a person who is interested in child porn should be near any youth, let alone be a leader. So it's great that Beltway took the action they did.

I also think there is another, more sinister reason this happens.

Creeps know that if they manage to blend in long enough, they can gain a position of influence and access by volunteering at a church. Where else is it normal for an adult to hang out with a dozen teens they aren't related to?

Parents, remain vigilant and listen to your kids and teens when they tell you an adult makes them uncomfortable- or if you suspect an adult is a little too fond of them. Sadly, we all have to stay alert- even at church.
