The American Kennel Club recently announced that French Bulldogs have taken over Labs as the most popular breed in the U.S. The AKC notes that the dog's popularity stems from the fact that they are "[a] smart, compact breed" compatible with various lifestyles. But are they appropriate for the Texas way of life?

First, we should clarify that French Bulldogs are the most popular breed registered with the AKC. So this only looks at animals that are purebred with papers. There are many, many dogs out there that are cross-bred or even purebreds that are not registered. Like many, many people out there, my favorite breed is "rescue" and I have no idea what she is beyond absolutely wonderful.

I am sure the rise in popularity of French Bulldogs has a lot to do with urban and apartment living. Many landlords have breed restrictions and/or weight limits on dogs as if smaller dogs cannot do the same damage that a larger dog can (hint: they can and do).

The AKC did not break down the popularity of breeds by state, so I can only speculate on the most popular dog in Texas. Perhaps in Texas urban centers, French Bulldogs do reign supreme (I doubt it).

And we all know that much of Texas is still wide open spaces, so it's hard for me to believe that there are more French Bulldogs roaming the plains or hill country than there are dogs like Labs, Heelers, and Border Collies. You know, dogs capable of work. No offense intended, Frenchie.

Even with smaller companion dogs, I see long-standing Texas cultural and historical influences at play, like the German Dachshund or the Mexican Chihuahua, remaining popular for years to come.

Interested in a Frenchie? Consider these things:

French Bulldogs have a long list of possible health problems, including Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome, which means their shortened faces can cause serious breathing and temperature regulation problems. That's right, you absolutely cannot leave this dog outside in even moderately hot or cold temperatures.

A French Bulldog will generally only live 10-12 years.

French Bulldogs cost between $1500 and $3000 and you need to budget way more than that for probable vet bills.

French Bulldogs are the most stolen dogs. Again, you cannot leave these dogs outside on their own. And if you remember, Lady Gaga's dog walker was famously robbed, shot, beaten, and nearly killed for her French Bulldogs.

They are very cute, but remember, these dogs are an enormous responsibility and expense. And while my dog was free, she's proven to be priceless.
