An Evening at Lubbock’s Star Comics To Promote Inclusivity
An Evening at Star Comics is Saturday, August 13th form 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at 3504 34th. The event is all ages and free to attend.
I can relate to feeling very passionate and interested in a subject, hobby, etc., but not feeling like I was an expert enough, or cool enough for that matter, to discuss it with like minded individuals. And I've certainly felt actively excluded, even bullied, out of doing the things I want to do.
Comic culture has come a long way from being a boys-only club. Of course, there's always going to be some nerds that feel like anyone who doesn't fit their mold couldn't possibly have a real or researched opinion about comic books. Imagine gatekeeping...books. Happily, I see way more folks actively pushing comics on their friends and family, even if those friends and family are initially resistant. That's what I like to see.
Lubbock's Star Comics (3504 34th) is always an inclusive place for anyone interested in comics. The staff is so friendly and great at making recommendations if you're not sure what you want to read next. Over the years, they've teamed up with local artist Sam Gaitan to bring several events which were once called "Ladies Night" - a chance for women to take over Star to shop, cosplay, and discuss comics. Ladies Night has evolved to become An Evening at Star Comics:
an annual event where women, men, nonbinary, transgender, or wherever you fall on the spectrum are welcome to come and get to know your local comic book shop in a fun and safe way! LGBTQIA+ and all ages friendly!
It's a fun opportunity to cosplay (if you like, certainly not required), meet comic fans, shop and more. Local artists, reading recommendations and even snacks are available. And the event is FREE. You don't have to leave the kids at home either, they are actively invited to participate. In fact, graphic novels and comic books have been shown to improve reading comprehension and motivation in children.
I've been to several of these events in the past, and my daughter and I enjoyed them immensely. I know they helped spur her cosplay passion- a passion which has taught her amazing skills like the ability to sew costumes, construct props, build wigs and most importantly, the ability to be a friendly and kind human that shares her enthusiasm with the world.
