This is one bad mom.

The strange case involving 37-year-old Ashley Liford and her adopted son, Matthew, actually goes back to 2017.

The Liford name first made headlines in Lubbock in June 2017, when Matthew Liford, who was 18 years old at the time, was accused of punching his 6-week-old daughter in the head, fracturing her skull. Liford admitted to the crime, and was later indicted by a Grand Jury in Lubbock in September 2017.

It was during that investigation when authorities learned some disturbing details about the family: That both the baby girl and her 1-year-old brother were the result of a sexual affair between Matthew and his adoptive mother. The affair produced the baby boy when Matthew was 16 years old, according to previous reports.

The mother and son were indicted that summer for engaging in sexual intercourse with each other, KCBD reports.

Mrs. Liford's sentencing breaks down as follows:

  • 20 years for second-degree felony count of sexual assault of a child
  • 5 years for prohibited sexual conduct with a relative

She will serve the time consecutively, with 651 days credited from her time in jail up until now.

Matthew's abuse of the baby is completely unacceptable, but I cannot help but feel that his rage is the by-product of the sexual abuse he encountered at the hands of his adoptive mother.

It's vitally important that we fight the stigma against male sexual abuse victims. They need to feel no shame in coming forward and reporting their abusers, even if their abuser is female. She was an authority figure in his life and took advantage of it. She should pay as much as any male molester.
