As a Millennial person, I strive to be inclusive and welcoming to people despite any differences we may have, however, one demographic can be challenging at times- them kids.

Don't get me wrong, I like Gen Z for many reasons, particularly bringing back 90s fashion, which I am ancient enough to have participated in the first time.

When it comes to nightlife, crowds tend to naturally "shake out" based on vibe- older, more mellow folks end up at townie bars while the babies go to trendier, louder places.

However, some bars have begun to enforce an age restriction beyond the federally mandated 21 & up to drink. They are only allowing people who are 30 or older into their establishments.

That's one way to curate a crowd, I suppose.

The reasoning doesn't seem to be snobbery either- two bars in downtown Louisville, Kentucky are enforcing the rule, citing the safety of their patrons.

And while one of the bar owners said the change was a "long time coming" it came the day after two people were fatally shot in the area.

Could this trend make its way to Texas?

Well, it already has, and Texas may have started it. Horizons & More in San Antonio only allows 30+ patrons and has followed the practice since 2022. The bar's homepage states it is for "the grown & mature."

I can't help but think, "That sounds really nice!"

But is this discrimination?

Not legally, no. Neither the Civil Rights Act nor the American Disability Act forbids discrimination based on age.

If a bar only allowed people under 30, would we raise our eyebrows and call it ageist? Perhaps, but that's not a bar I'd want to go to anyway.
