Body of Missing Texas Kayaker Discovered in Benbrook Lake
TARRANT COUNTY, Texas - The body of a kayaker reported missing Saturday afternoon was discovered in Benbrook Lake. This is the second drowning involving a kayaker on the lake in two weeks.
According to a witness, 36-year-old Robert Eugene Jones was out on the lake when his kayak flipped over. He did not resurface, prompting a search from rescue divers. His body was recovered by Tarrant County Game Wardens and the Texas Game Warden Underwater Search and Recovery Team.
Officials are warning kayakers to take extra care while out on the water. If you plan on kayaking, make sure you wear a life vest. You never know what could happen. Even the strongest swimmers are susceptible to drowning. Please think twice before entering the water without a vest.
Here are a few safety tips for kayakers that may come in handy:
- Always wear a life vest.
- Check the weather to avoid strong winds, storms, and extreme temperatures.
- Dress for the water in moisture-wicking attire or a wetsuit.
- Check all of your gear to ensure it's safe before launching into the water.
- Bring extra safety equipment like a whistle, a dry bag, and a first-aid kit. It's also a good idea to put your cellphone in a waterproof box, even if your phone is waterproof.
- Always let someone know you will be out on the water, especially if you are going alone.
