According to a notice posted by the FDA, some cans of tuna sold in Texas could be at risk of carrying clostridium botulinum (a.k.a. botulism) a, "potentially fatal form of food poisoning."

Botulism can occur in canned goods when a can is dented or otherwise damaged, however, these tuna cans are being recalled due to a manufacturer's defect that could allow the toxin into the tuna.

The tuna was sold in many grocery stores nationwide including certain Trader Joe's, Walmart, Genova, and H-E-B. If you purchased tuna from either of the latter two in Texas, you'll want to review the recalled products.

Is My Tuna Safe?

There are the products affected by the recall:

Genova Solid White Tuna in Olive Oil, in various sizes, singles, and multi-packs.

There are several UPC numbers, can codes, and "Best if used by" dates. If you have this product in your pantry, check the lot and date numbers here.

Genova Solid White Tuna in Extra Virgin Olive Oil With Sea Salt

UPC 4800013275, Can Code S88N D1M, Best if used by 1/17/2028

H-E-B Solid White Tuna in Water 5.0 oz 4 Pack

UPC 4122043345 Can Codes S9FA 45K & S9FA 46K, Best if used by 12/12/2027.

Because the recall is due to a manufacturing defect with the can, the risk of botulism will increase over time- so check now to ensure your tuna is safe if you bought any of the above brands in Texas.

If you bought tuna outside of Texas at Walmart or Trader Joe's, check the recall list here.

No illnesses have been reported due to these brands and no other Tri-Union seafood products are subject to the recall beyond the ones listed here.

While a bad case of botulism will stink to high heaven, you should still not use any of these products even if they seem okay. These products can be returned to the point of purchase for a full refund.  Better safe than sorry!
