Less Than A Year In, McDonald’s Already Closing Texas Cosmc’s Locations
I would have bet the barn on McDonald's spin-off drink-focused restaurant.
When Cosmc's were announced to pop up all over Texas, I was sure that my Texas town would have one in a year or so.
Texas has robustly supported all types of drive-through coffee and energy drink concepts. In fact, we have many more locations of several brands of drink drive-throughs than in other states.
For example, we have more 7Brew locations than exist in 7Brew's home state of Arkansas.
And the initial enthusiasm for Cosmc's was definitely there. The pilot location in Bolingbrook, Illinois saw double the visits that a new McDonald's location does- and had lines so long that police had to direct traffic.
A drive-thru drink-loving state seemed like a slam dunk- but were were not "lovin' it" after all?
Less than a year in, McDonald's has announced it will shutter half of its current Cosmc's locations.
According to WFAA News, McDonald's announced it would close three of its "larger format" Cosmc's locations in Texas, but has not yet disclosed which three it will be. Cosmc's are currently located in San Antonio and in North Texas.
However, this does mark the end of Cosmc's in Texas.
Despite the closures of the larger format sites, McDonald's revealed plans to open two smaller format locations in Texas this year. The concept's smaller format sites allow for the testing of new products and operations for its customer base, the company said.
So while this is definitely a step back, it's not a goodbye. But if you haven't been to a Cosmc's near you yet, you may want to try it while you still can, as Cosmc's Texas footprint will be smaller soon.
