Last night (7/17/2023) a devasting fire destroyed a building at 34th and Dowden. The building housed three companion businesses- Dora Moss Murphy Beds, Dora Moss Interiors, and Leroy Henry Roofing & Remodeling, despite efforts from multiple area fire crews.

Existing products and projects went up in flames, including all supplies and tools. So much work, instantly rendered to dust.  And I am very sorry to say that Potato, the shop dog, perished from smoke inhalation.

I spoke with Leroy Henry on the phone today. I was very happy to hear that he is determined to rebuild his businesses. In the meantime, he's hoping to find a temporary shop to work from and some tools he can use until his insurance is sorted. Insurance claims of this magnitude can take quite some time, and of course, a new structure will take time to build.

I asked Leroy if customers were understanding of the situation. He told me that he was ready to refund clients their deposits but that no one had yet taken him up on it. Lubbock, I could cry I'm so proud. That amount of sympathy, patience, and kindness is truly moving to me.

Leroy also mentioned that he was relieved that most of the work his crew does is off-site, meaning that they can continue to function and make a living while everything gets rebuilt. I could tell that his crew was foremost in his thoughts.

Leroy is already at work cleaning up, because Lubbock folks like Leroy have grit and fortitude, even in the face of disaster.
