Find Out When The Leaves Will Change Color in Texas This Year

Fall is back and sweater weather is NEARLY upon us. I keep thinking I can talk the weather into cooling down if I just put on a sweater for work in the morning and roll with it. Unfortunately, I'm still peeling it off on the walk to my car at the end of the day. BUT, I know those cool vibes are headed this way, along with beautiful foliage.

So, when are the leaves expected to change color in Texas this year?

According to SmokeyMountain.com's interactive map, we won't see any change in the leaves until around mid-October, beginning with the northwest portion of the state. Take a second to check out this sweet map by clicking here. The leaves will be finishing changing colors by mid to late November.

So, what causes the leaves to change color at all?

Sugars stored in the tree produce different colors for the leaves that grow. Carotenoids produce brown, orange, and yellow colors, anthocyanin produces red leaf colors, and chlorophyll is responsible for the standard green leaf color. Chlorophyll and carotenoids are present year-round during a tree's growth, but anthocyanins are only produced during the fall season. Make sense?
