Have you noticed an army of tiny little flies hanging out in your kitchen?

Congratulations, you have been carefully selected by the fruit fly gods.

I've been dealing with them at my house, and I swear, things went from "Oh, there's a little bug" to "WHY ARE THERE 47 OF YOU!?" overnight.

Fruit Flies Are The Worst!

If they are itty bitty, brownish-tan, and seem especially interested in your sink, then there's a good chance you're dealing with pesky fruit flies. They are attracted to ripe or rotting fruits and veggies, sugary drinks, trash, and any little bits of food you may not even realize are around.

The banana peel you left on the counter overnight?

That's 5-star bug food, my friend.

So, How Do You Get Rid of Fruit Flies?

Check your fruit bowl, clean your countertops, take the trash out, and clean your kitchen sink and drain like crazy. Those tiny freeloaders are attracted to moisture and food residue, so make sure you get rid of anything they might find delicious.

The most annoying part?

Getting rid of the adults isn't always enough.

Yes, those bad boys have been banging it out all over your house.

If they've found a spot to lay eggs, they will keep appearing long after you thought you'd killed the final boss. (I'm pretty sure that's the situation at my house. These dudes have found their way up my stairs and into my bedroom, and I've had ENOUGH.)

My Personal Solution

I'm not sure what the science is behind it, but years ago, a friend told me to put a saucer of dish soap and vinegar in the areas where you notice them. That stuff seems to trap them really quickly.

I put a dish of Dawn and vinegar out last night and woke up to a whole party of them floating around in it. I know there are still more...and I'm on a mission to take out their entire family line.

Don't Panic!

So, if your house suddenly feels like a fruit-fly nightclub, don't panic. Start by getting rid of all the things they love to snack on, cleaning up any sneaky little messes, and keeping an eye on your fruit bowls.

P.S. Those little flies especially love a good rotten pumpkin, so watch out where you put your jack-o'-lanterns this year!
