Lubbock Locals Love These Nearby Escape Spots
If you live in Lubbock, you know the deal: it’s hot, it’s flat, and eventually you have to get out of town. The good news? You don’t have to go far to feel like you’re on vacation, and that's a big deal.
Let's take a look at a few great destinations that won't cost you a million hours in the car with screaming kids or drain your savings account!
Palo Duro Canyon (1.5–2 hours away)
This is really the unofficial Lubbock summer trip. It's the second biggest canyon in the United States, and offers hiking, camping, and breathtaking views. You can also catch the outdoor musical at night! Pro tip: Go early in the day to avoid melting in the sun.
Buffalo Springs Lake (30 minutes away)
I almost didn't put this one on the list because it's a no-brainer, but you never know who might be new to Lubbock. If you've never been out to Buffalo Lake, it's a quick escape that offers fishing and boating, plus, there is zero long drive required to get there.
Carlsbad Caverns (4 hours away)
My family visited nearly every single year when I was growing up, and it was so much fun! You can watch thousands of bats fly out at sunset. The cave is soooo massive it doesn't feel real. It's cool, weird, and totally worth the drive.

Caprock Canyons / Matador (2 hours away)
This spot will be much less crowded than Palo Duro, AND it's just as beautiful, making it a real winner in my book. Gorgeous canyon views and free-roaming bison. Very cool.
Galveston (8–9 hours away)
Yes, it is a bit of a drive, but sometimes you just need to have a frozen cocktail on the beach. It's hot and chaotic in Galveston, but that's totally different from West Texas! The point was to get out of town and do something wild! Try Galveston on for size.
Or Stay in Lubbock (No shame)
Not every single vacation has to involve packing a massive bag and spending a bunch of money on gas. We've got lakes, live music, art trails, and a ton of random summer events happening all over town. Sometimes the best move is to just pretend you are a tourist in your own city. Check out the things you've never seen!
The Lubbock Truth
Most people here fall into one of three categories:
- Canyon people
- New Mexico people
- “Let’s just go to the lake,” people
And honestly? All three are valid. I'm a New Mexico person for sure.
I hope this helps you make some plans for your summer!
