Did you know that your child's baby teeth lay the groundwork for their future oral health? While they are temporary, these adorable pearly whites are present for a very important reason. They ensure that there's an appropriate amount of space for permanent teeth to grow.

The American Dental Association notes that "when a baby tooth is lost too early, the permanent teeth can drift into the empty space and make it difficult for other adult teeth to find room when they come in. This can make teeth crooked or crowded." This is why it's recommended that you start taking your child to the dentist after they turn one.

Local Dental Fair Will Be Filled With Fun

Thankfully, for the parents who haven't made an appointment with a pediatric dentist, Lubbock's Science Spectrum has a solution that will not only ensure good oral health, but it will also be good, clean fun.

Give Kids a Smile is a free annual event that will be happening this weekend on Saturday, April 30th, 2022.

The Science Spectrum will be partnering with South Plains District Dental Society to bring oral health education and information to community members. However, their biggest goal is to get kids excited about taking care of their teeth. They will also have free services to help parents determine if a visit to the dentist is in order.

FREE Dental Screenings Will Be Available

James Nesmith, the administrative manager of Science Spectrum, notes that on top of the myriad of games, prizes, giveaways and special guests, there will also be free dental screenings for kids up to age 12.

"An actual licensed dentist will look and see if they notice anything of concern." Nesmith said. "Then, if you need a referral to a dentist, they'll be happy to assist you."

Best of all, the first 200 children that participate in these evaluations will get a free ticket to the museum. Additionally, any adult or child who does not participate in a screening that day can still get $2 off standard admission during the event.

The dental fair will be happening this Saturday, April 30th, 2022 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the lobby of the Science Spectrum. Make sure to check out the fun and gain some wisdom at the same time. The molar, the merrier!
