I have a very special love for the Goo Goo Dolls. And soon, they'll be returning to Lubbock to perform at the school I love.

Why the Goo Goo Dolls Are The Best Guys Ever

Imagine this: It's Lubbock in 1996, and you are a kid. Your dad takes you to see quite a lineup: the up-and-coming No Doubt, the astronomically rising in popularity Goo Goo Dolls, and arguably the biggest band of the year: Bush.  It was awesome.

Since Dad is in radio, you get to meet dreamboat Gavin Rossdale, but that is not who you fall in love with. You fall head over heels for the Goo Goo Dolls. Why? Because they don't ignore the kid in the room. In fact, John and Robbie (you are on a first-name basis now) go out of their way to talk to you, make you feel welcome, and give you a bunch of grapes and a bottle of root beer.

That is a beautiful memory I hold very dear, and the reason I've cheered on their success ever since. Watching them probably make a lifetime's worth of money off Iris a couple of years later was very satisfying for me.

Wreck 'Em Goo Goo Dolls (And Bowling For Soup)

Shout out to whoever booked this; these two bands are great choices. Goo Goo Dolls will be perfect for visiting parents and the kids who grew up hearing them, and of course all the Tech babies will know Bowling For Soup because of Phineas and Ferb. BFS is a light-hearted party band with incredible stage banter and fun vibes, while Goo Goo Dolls will bring the mellow feel-good glow that's perfectly hopeful and optimistic as we begin a new school year.

The Details For Attendees

From Texas Tech's WebsiteAlumni, students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend. Gates for the concert will open at 6 p.m. The concert is free, and free parking will be available west of the arena. Food trucks will be on site, and a clear-bag policy will be in effect.

May this be a most excellent school year, and Wreck 'Em Tech.
