Even back in the 90s, when my town had a Grandy's restaurant, a step inside that eatery felt like a step back in time.

With its quaint, grandma-core decor and down-home Southern-style favorites, everyone could agree on Grandy's.

What Was Grandy's Restaurant Known For?

Grandy's, which began in Nashville, Tennessee, in the 1970s, was created to give fast food "the ambiance of a full-service restaurant."

Grandy's took off like crazy in the 1980s, reaching over 200 locations. People loved the fried chicken, rolls, biscuits, and breakfast items. I really miss the breakfast items.

What Caused The Decline of Grandy's?

In the 90s, Grandy's began a slow but steady decline until today, when only 10 restaurants still exist in Texas, and just a handful elsewhere. Tyler, Texas, lost its Grandy's only a few months ago.

Grandy's kept getting bought and sold by various other companies, which probably didn't help its footprint or longevity.

And it seems that these types of restaurants fell out of favor, especially as a fast food option, where burgers and tacos reign supreme. Most people I know prefer at least a fast-casual environment to enjoy their chicken fry in.

Could Grandy's Make A Return?

I'm not sure, but I'd love to see someone try, especially in my hometown. The nostalgia would be a shot in the arm upon opening, and if they managed to keep prices low and quality high, I'd be there for breakfast for sure.
