Here’s a simple tip every Texan should know—your ceiling fan might be working against you.

I’ve written this story so many times I almost skipped it—until I realized my own ceiling fans were spinning every which way, creating chaos instead of comfort. So yeah…this still matters, and I’d bet most of you haven’t checked yours either. Get that direction right—it’ll keep you cooler and help save a little money too.

Here's The Direction Your Ceiling Fan Should Be Spinning In Hot Weather

When temperatures start heating up, your ceiling fan should be spinning counter-clockwise. That direction pushes air downward, creating a wind-chill effect that makes the room feel cooler—even if the temperature hasn’t changed. If your fan is spinning the wrong way, it can actually make your space feel warmer, which defeats the whole purpose.

Switching it is easy. Turn the fan off and wait for the blades to completely stop—don’t try to slow them down with your hand. Then look for a small switch on the base of the fan. Flip it, turn the fan back on, and you’re set for warmer weather.

One more thing—before you fire it back up, take a second to wipe the blades down. Dust builds up fast (especially in Texas), and flipping the direction can send all that junk flying right into your air.

It’s a quick fix, takes less than a minute, and can make a noticeable difference in how your home feels as things heat up.
