How To Dress Your Best (& For The Worst) In Lubbock, Texas

I recently saw an interesting question posted on Lubbock's Reddit page:

Hello! I’m from Connecticut and going to college in Lubbock as a freshman this fall. I’ve not spent a ton of time in Texas so I’m not sure what sorts of clothing I should bring.

Their question was primarily on how to dress for the weather, much to the bemusement of locals, who know that the weather can be virtually anything if you stay here long enough. Extreme heat, below-freezing temperatures, weeks without rain, and torrential downpours.

There were many great answers on how to best outfit yourself for the weather in Lubbock, which we will get to, but I'd also like to take this opportunity to talk about a few style essentials that make great wardrobe investments in this area.

So what's worth spending a little cash on to look your best in Lubbock, but also be prepared for the worst? I absolutely have a #1 item. It's pricey, but well worth it.

GOOD BOOTS 

I have a pair of black Tecovas that look fantastic, work with nearly any outfit, and will likely last me a lifetime. I should note that boots work with any outfit specifically in Texas and also work for any occasion. That might not be true elsewhere, but I love that it's true here. Boots are also a practical choice in most kinds of weather. You don't have to go "cowboy" with your boot choice, but why not? You're in Texas, enjoy it. Next, is an item we will all need, especially in Summer.

GREAT SUNGLASSES 

Sunglasses that you'll actually wear and won't lose are a great investment, even if you have to get prescription glasses. We have a high UV index here, and it's worth it to save yourself the eye strain on very bright days, which can happen any time of year.

LAYERS, LAYERS, LAYERS

This was the best weather-related advice Lubbock Redditors had to offer- dress in layers, particularly during our awkward early Spring and late Fall days that see a huge swing in temperatures from morning to afternoon.

BE YOURSELF, BABY

Counterintuitively, I have found that "big" cities have more of a uniform sense of fashion than Lubbock does. The last time I was in Austin on 6th street, people were dressed so similarly that it was giving "cult". Boring!

First Friday Art Trail is a particularly great time to bring out your most forward fashion. And no one bats an eye at your choices, but people will give you compliments when you nail your look.
